History (abridged from here) The ‘Emerald’ summer camp was a holiday resort of some 100 cabins set in a pine grove near to Chernobyl. Featuring a cinema, shop, library, ballroom and boat station many of the cabins were also painted with children’s cartoon characters. In the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster some of the ‘liquidators’ tasked with decontaminating the area settled and made use of the cabins. Chernobyl: Reactor 4 and New Safe Confinement, robots and liquidators monument, Reactor 5 and cooling tower – April 2015

In April 2015 I spent an unforgettable 4 days exploring the radioactively contaminated exclusion zone in and around Chernobyl, now part of Ukraine. I went with a group of about 30 other urban explorers, many of whom had been a number of times before. Rather than paying for expensive day trips all the way from Kiev we were able to stay in the workers’ city of Slavutych and take a train with the workers each morning directly into ‘the zone’.…

Sorry that I’ve not posted much in recent months… I’ve been busy exploring and changing jobs, Christmas, etc etc, plus editing the small matter of 4 days’ worth of photos from a trip to Chernobyl last Easter!
