Explore #9 of the Taking the Piscine Tour

After a revisit to Chateau d’Ah it was time for somewhere new – the huge but seriously knackered Chateau Congo.

History (borrowed and amended from Rebecca’s blog)
This large chateau was built in 1752 on 4 acres of land. The castle’s main facade is built in the Louis XIV style with whitewashed brick, and the outbuildings built in stone with the coat of arms of the Marquis of Radigues. The castle has undergone many renovations over the years, but now lies derelict. It is even thought that it may have been built on an ancient Roman villa as coins and pottery have been found on the grounds. It is codenamed “Congo” after the African-themed wallpaper which adorns one of the now-collapsed upstairs rooms.

Our Explore
Congo is definitely one of the most seriously decayed and collapsing locations that I’ve explored in a while. The upstairs is almost completely gone and would be a complete death trap. Even navigating the ground floor was tricky in places. We were short of time, so we all grabbed the money shot – the remains of the grand living room, and then hit the road again.
